Designing Portraits with Afternoon Light

I’m making a conscious effort not only to respond to light, but also learn how to design with it. Recognizing the different effects of light when working with a camera is quite stimulating; it demands anticipation and working out challenges.

In any case, regardless of the form of expression, light is king, and it’s taking me a lifetime to embrace it. Recently, I collaborated with Tania on a second photo shoot that took place later in the afternoon, giving us the opportunity to put it’s golden light to good use.

Both Tania and I agreed on shooting simple, so the only modifier I packed with me was a 5 in 1 reflector, which not only came in handy to bounce light back on her but also worked very well as as a backdrop in some closeup portraits.

Overall, I worked with Tania with the sun coming from different angles, which is yet another reason why shooting late int he afternoon is so much fun, as the sun sets in the horizon, the quality of light is continuously changing, giving us plenty of chances to create portraits with different dynamics.
