New York Photo Walking: Seeing Practice

I’m a little ashamed to admit that despite living relatively close to NY, I haven’t given myself the chance to venture much into it to see all kinds of interesting subjects.

Having watched a good amount of Street Photography videos on YouTube over the past few months, there has been a question that never failed come to mind, and that’s how they manage to take awesome pictures of people crossing the street? Well, it turns out that a place like Time Square is a perfect place to do just that, the tricky thing is figuring how to do it right, so I'm still working on it.

On that day, my photo walk around the city were split into two parts; first, it involved my location scouting for my photo session with Karlyn, (See previous post) and with the second, I registered my walk to Grand Central using both my digital and film camera. However, before heading to Grand Central, I decided to make a quick stop by the NY public library and check it out.

The NY public library is a fantastic building which also presented an excellent opportunity to observe people. It was fascinating to see how they transform their bodies as they emerge on what they’re doing, whether it’s reading a book, navigating on their laptops or simply taking a break. Being that it’s so common to see people looking at their phones screens, I deliberately chose not to observe that as much as possible, unless something interesting was happening in the same scene.
