My definition of a successful photoshoot is shifting from technicalities to how much self-expression I allow to my subjects. Learning to help them be themselves is making an impact on my portraiture work. Little direction and more interaction allow more relaxed expressions and body language. Instead of telling the sitter that I want something, I choose to suggest why it would work better, which sets a collaborative environment that only works for the best.
For this photoshoot, we met in Black Sheep Atelier in Norwalk, CT. Working in a photo studio like BSA couldn't be better for how I like to work, allowing me full control of whatever type of light I choose without too many distracting elements.
My subject for this photoshoot was Monika, a NY based musical actress and lyricist. With this opportunity to photograph portraits, I limited my direction to light position and posture. Everything else is the result of Monika channeling her creativity through her music and letting her be herself. Check out Monika on Instagram as @monika_withaKay
