One thing I like most about working with a camera is the challenge of making quick decisions. Not having to overthink before pressing the shutter and seeking a creative response to what's in front of me is very fun and stimulating.
Shooting that way sure is a way to get inconsistent results, and I'm quite sure I would be more methodical if I were primarily a film shooter, but oddly enough, being more responsive when using the camera helps me to recognize light and become more acquainted with the exposure triangle.

Being spontaneous with the camera does not mean being careless. Something I do before I set out to shoot is that I make sure I take time to check my settings and limit myself to adjust one thing only and that in most cases is the ISO or shutter speed.
