Whether you’re a model or a photographer, looks alone can only do so much for you. Thus said, adding props with no intent is also a shortcut for mundane results.
While I was planning my photo shoot with Melissa and looking through her portfolio for inspiration, I was excited to discover she’s an incredible singer as I enjoyed watching some of her singing videos on youtube. With that in mind, I knew right off the bat that I wanted to take her portrait wearing a set of headphones like she does in her videos. So, It was a lot of fun responding to her immediate expressions as she modeled wearing them.
Spending some time learning about the person I will photograph is very helpful in attempting to create something valuable. More often than not, when engaging with the person in front of my camera, I do my best to learn about their personality and find some common ground on which they let go of any inhibitions they might have. Usually, the pictures I like best are the ones that happen in between poses.
