Conversation as the Best Photo Trick: A Photo Shoot Narrative

Angelika is a published author and frequent traveler with an active lifestyle. We met for a casual portrait walk for about 45 minutes on a pleasant morning later in October. We paced her current neighborhood, trying different locations and lighting conditions. To follow Angelica on Instagram, check out @thetravelingfantasywriter

I wanted to work with Angelika again ever since we did our first photoshoot about two years prior. Back then, I used to bring more equipment than necessary to a shoot, which only made things more complicated. Comparing this recent portrait session to our very first one, it’s good to realize how stripping from the idea of equipment acquisition has empowered me to focus better on the process of image-making, and not on how to use any given gadget.

Although I’m still subscribed to the idea of creating an idealistic representation of whoever stands in front of my camera, it’s becoming more critical for me as I progress on a photoshoot to highlight what I perceive to be traits of a person’s character. So, working with an active mind like Angelika’s is always heaven sent!

The way Angelika engages in casual conversation as pictures are being taken allows me to keep an eye on body language and facial expressions. Obviously, not everyone is an extrovert, and I cannot expect the same from every person. Still, I do know that everyone has a story to tell, so connecting my eyes to my hearing when doing portrait photography can only make things better. When it comes to portrait photography, body language, and relaxed expressions, it’s what now stands on top of my list.
