Lindsay Lohan by Richard Phillips

This is the first painting I ever seen from American painter Richard Phillips. Apparently, he’s well known for his portraits of popular people, which quite frankly I have little regard for. However, with this painting of Lindsay Lohan, I was immediately drawn by the interplay between its cool shadows and warm tones; I also enjoy how the fine threads of her hair make makes tension with the soft contours in her chest.  Having come across with the work of Richard Phillips has reminded me that when it comes to painting, the subject matter is not as important as actually doing it.

 Con esta pintura, que es la primera que encuentro del pintor Americano Richard Phillips, quien aparentemente es reconocido por sus retratos de celebridades que en realidad no son nada del otro mundo, pero sin embargo, en esta pintura que ha hecho de Lindsay Lohan, disfruto de ver  sus sombras frías  en contraste con sus tonos  cálidos y las finas hebras de su cabello haciendo tensión con el contorno de su pecho.  Con esta pintura logro recordar que a al momento de pintar, lo que verdaderamente importa es el simple hecho de hacerlo.

1930s: Both Classic and Modern

I really like when classism and modernism are able to co-exist within the same bounds. Not in vain, two of my favorite painters are Diego Velasquez (1559 -1660) and Amadeo Modigliani (1884-1020). For me, these two painters were courageous enough to venture with a modernist approach within the realms of classism.

 

In that same way, I am also fascinated by the art produced in the 1930s, because is as if for a moment in time, there was a perfect fusion between the safety net of the organic forms in classical art and the uncertain mechanics of modernism.  Another reason I feel bounded to the 30s is because that decade also witnessed the arrival of design as something functional and accessible to all.

 

Me intriga cuando el clasicismo hace perfecta combinación con el modernismo, supongo que esa es la razón del porque dos de mis pintores favoritos son Diego Velásquez y Amadeo Modigliani. Estos pintores tuvieron el coraje de aventurar en el modernismo y aun así manteniéndose dentro de los cánones del clasicismo.

 

Ya que a mi manera de ver, el arte es y será siempre cosa de contrastes, uno de mis periodos favoritos en la historia del arte son los años 30. Me da la impresión de que en esta época existió la perfecta fusión entre los riesgos del modernismo y lo institucionalizado por el clasicismo. Por ultimo, algo también importante por destacar es que a partir de esta época, comenzó a verse el diseño como algo funcional y accesible a toda la sociedad.

Some Monologues

A movie is the combination of well throughout compositions, a collective effort to bring a story to life. With this post, I want to make attention to the role of acting and share some memorable monologues that have stuck with me over the years. For me, a monologue makes a captivating pause to reflect on the story. Acting monologues can be inspiring and contemplative, and these are some of my favorites.

Sunshine, 1999

This monologue in "Sunshine" is fascinating. We see how a man reads a collection of letters written by the patriarch from each generation to his son. What struck me was the reader's father giving advice on living detached from pride and security, while newspapers are crushed with old furniture in a garbage truck.

To The Wonder, 2012

This poignant voiceover read by actor Javier Barden feels like a personal prayer. An internal dialogue with God as it’s overlayed by powerful scenes that make us reflect on the frailties of humankind. To The Wonder is a film directed by Terrence Malik, a director with a rich cinematic voice well worth studying, and this video essay is a good starting point

Cinema Paradiso, 1988

Framed by an old wooden door, Alfredo shares “The soldier’s story ”with Toto, which foreshadows what’s to happen between Toto and Elena. The visual simplicity in this monologue and the way Italian Actor Philippe Noiret delivers his lines with pauses and burst enthusiasm really brings it to another level.

As we are saturated with images and technology is good to discover new alternatives to be uplifted and inspired. Actors have a tremendous power to do just that when they deliver monologues.
