Eve Arnold and Sam Shaw took some of my favorite photos of Marilyn Monroe. Their pictures of the iconic actress in a city park or open field in pure daylight are just beautiful to look at, I’ve always loved the simplicity of those photos; it’s nice looking at Marilyn relaxed and with her guard down. So, With that kind of visual reference in mind, is how I set out to shoot on location portraits, usually, it's old-school editorial photography that does it for me, and I couldn't help feeling that vibe in my recent shoot with Haley at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, in downtown New Haven, CT
I became immediately attracted to the geometry on the building’s façade ever since I visited it on a photo walk, and is interesting to me how I now recognize it in other people’s work. Still, it wasn’t until I observed a statute by Alexander Calder not far from it, that I felt this shoot was heading in the right direction. I love how the splashes of primary color on the statue looks in contrast to Haley’s clothes, which in my view, even added a magical touch of a vintage style that I like so much.
